The main building of the Province of South Holland will be renovated and made more sustainable in the coming years. The building requires modernization and the renovation must lead to an energy-neutral building. The project thus fulfills the ambition of the province to make all its buildings climate neutral.
Award tender
The renovation, including 15 years of maintenance, has been awarded to the 'Hollands Licht' consortium. A collaboration led by the main contractor Kuijpers, together with Kraaijvanger Architects, DGMR and Valstar Simonis. The new design aims at a more logical layout of the building and a visual connection of the Statenzaal with the city of The Hague, through a glass facade towards the Malieveld.
Sustainable and energy neutral
The sustainable renovation of the provincial government building is in line with existing climate policy goals, such as the Green City Deal EnergieRijk The Hague. For example, the third floor is being replaced by a sustainable roof structure, which filters natural light into the building, but keeps direct sunlight out. Insulation of the existing facades and triple glazing help to prevent heating and contribute to a reduction of the cooling load.
In addition, solar panels on the roof, in combination with energy storage in the ground (ATES), ensure that the building-related energy is generated sustainably and locally. Furthermore, materials are reused as much as possible and any new materials have a responsible (circular) origin.
Schedule
The hull design will be worked out in the coming year, with the interior design also being integrated. The renovation will start after the summer of 2019 and will be completed in early 2022. In addition to the design for the main building of the provincial government, the consortium will also work out a plan for making the other buildings in the complex more sustainable in the coming period.
