The new national hospital Curaçao Medical Center, formerly Hospital Nobo Otrabanda, officially and festively opened its doors in mid-November. It is in all respects a modern hospital with state-of-the-art equipment in combination with sustainable and innovative solutions. With this hospital, the government wants to bring healthcare on the island to a higher level.
In 2012, this project was acquired through a public tender as a Design Build and Maintain contract by a consortium led by Ballast Nedam. EGM architects and the local partner OeverzaadjerLyongo architects signed the design together. The technical installations are designed by Valstar Simonis. The ambition in the realization of this new hospital is that sustainable and innovative solutions will provide a better and pleasant living environment for its patients and employees. Not only for now but also with a view to the future
The new Curaçao Medical Center, located in the historic district of Otrabanda in Willemstad, has an area of approximately 40.000 m2 GFA and offers space for more than 260 beds. Characteristic of the design is the split into a building for the hot floor (including outpatient clinics, radiotherapy, ORs) and four wings that house the nursing wards, haemodialysis and the restaurant. The large central hall is the connecting element. This hall, which serves as an informal meeting place, is open (not air-conditioned) and oriented east-west; designed with the wind in the tradition of Curaçao.
This integral design has been realized in such a way that it meets the high sustainability ambitions, at least LEED Gold.
